Cloth Diaper Washing Instructions and Tips

There are a lot of sites on the internet that provide detailed instructions on how to cloth diaper your baby. Here is what I found worked best for me.

  • Change your baby and wipe them up with a warm wet rag or baby face cloth.
  • Rinse soiled diapers in the toilet and then use the lid of the diaper pail to transfer the diaper into the pail.
  • Don't put any water or anything in the pail. Some websites will suggest things like vinegar water or bleach water. Don't do it! If you do this then you will have to spin it out before you wash them. This will spray a horrible urine smell through out your house. If you leave the pail empty you can start the wash with a rinse cycle to loosen everything up again and you won't have the odor problem.
  • Do a cold rinse cycle with no soap then a hot water wash with soap.
  • Use borax and washing soda as a disinfectant rather than bleach as bleach will dramatically shorten the life of your diapers. Alternatively you could just use homemade laundry soap which already includes these ingredients.
  • Try using two diaper pails. Leave the one not currently being used in the laundry room. Two full pails is a full load. As an alternative, run your washer on half full.
  • Line dry when possible
  • Don't fold the diapers. Just shove them in the diaper drawer or leave them in a basket near the change table. This will save you tonnes of time since it has a high turnover rate. Besides, who cares if the diaper is wrinkled.
